To ensure the safe transportation of new energy vehicles (NEVs) across the Qiongzhou Straits, Hainan has introduced two dedicated ferries ahead of this year’s Chunyun Spring Festival Travel Rush. Featuring the latest in battery fire suppression equipment, the addition of these ships to the ferry fleet will add 3,500 passenger cars’ capacity.

The first of the two newly introduced large capacity RoRo (roll-on roll-off) NEV Ferries—Lüyuan No.1—already completed hermaiden voyageon December 29, 2024. With a projected capacity (weight/size dependent) of around 160 passenger vehicles per trip this addition will significantly improve the ability to transport NEVs across the Qiongzhou Straits, said Huang Peng (Hainan Provincial Department Director, and Spokesperson).

With the Lüyuan No. 2 slated to soon join her sister ship in service, traveling across the Straits will be easier than ever for NEV drivers.

During the Chunyun Spring Festival Travel Rush, there will be a minimum of 20 trips per day specifically for electric vehicles. At peak times, additional sailings may also be scheduled to ensure that at least 3,500 EVs can enter and exit the island each day.
